About Tems

Tems is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and a recording artist from Lagos State, Nigeria. Tems was born on 11 June 1995 in Lekki Phase 1 Lagos State, Nigeria. 

Tems’s real name is Temilade Openiyi and she’s an Afro-pop singer from Nigeria who sings in English, Yoruba and English.

 She rose when two of her songs reached top 40 on Billboard Hot 100.  

Tems (singer) Biography had a cameo appearance in Drake’s video for Fountains from his album Certified Lover Boy. and she was featured on Cardi B’s song Bickenhead with 21 Savage. 

Tems also worked with Wizkid on Essence and it peaked at number 8 on Billboard Hot 100 chart making her one of Nigeria’s most successful female artistes. 

She has been nominated for several awards including best new act in Africa and was listed as one of BBC Music’s hottest African acts to watch in

Tems Career

In 2018, Temarifa left her day job to pursue a career in music. She found music production skills on YouTube and in July 2018, she released her debut single, Mr Rebel, a song she made entirely by herself. 

In 2020, DJ Edu, who’s a disc jockey, picked her as one of ten artists to watch that year. In April 2020, she was on a song alongside fellow Nigerian singer Davido and English electronic music duo Disclosure.

She released another single in May 2020 titled Yawa which received airplay across Nigeria. 

In 2021, Temarifa was signed by Sony Music Entertainment Africa and announced plans to release an EP later in the year. 

 

Tems Music Career

Her debut EP Lonely came out in October 2021 with five songs including two singles Mr Rebel and Yawa. The album peaked at number 2 on Billboard’s World Albums chart.

In September 2020, Tems released her debut EP, For Broken Ears. All the tracks on the EP were composed by her and one of them, Damages, became an instant smash, making the number one spot on the Nigerian Apple Music chart and six on the TurnTable Top 50 chart and surpassing five million views on YouTube.

On October 30, 2020, Tems will be on another one of Wizkid’s tracks, entitled Essence, on his upcoming fourth studio album, Made in Lagos. The song will enter her at number one on the BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart. 

Awards

In 2020, on 8 November, Tems was included in The Future Awards Africa: Class of 2020. Later, in 2021, an updated version of Essence, with the addition of a feature from Canadian singer Justin Bieber, was released. The song rocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. 

In 2021, Canadian rapper and singer Drake mentioned them on his song, Fountains, which was the last track on his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy. The song charted at number 26 on the Hot 100. 

On September 15, 2021, Tems released her second extended play, If Orange Was a Place. She co-produced it with GuiltyBeatz, and the single Crazy Tings was released five days before and peaked at number three on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart. 

The same day, Tems was featured alongside Drake on American rapper Future’s single, Wait for U, from the latter’s ninth studio album, I Never Liked You. The song reached number one on the Hot 100, becoming the first song from Africa to do so. Tems credits the song with inspiration from For Broken Ears’ Higher

Tems Early Life

On June 11, 1995, Temilade Olaniyi was born in Lagos, Nigeria to a Nigerian mother and a British-Nigerian father. 

The family moved to the United Kingdom shortly after. Temilade’s parents divorced when she was five. 

Originally from Nigeria, Tem and her mother and brother lived in Ilupeju before moving to Lekki and Ajah. 

Tems  Biography

In Nigeria, Tem attended Dowen College before studying Economics in Monash, South Africa. At school, she was discovered by her music teacher and learned to play the piano. In addition, she practised singing with her brother, using his guitar for accompaniment.
