Top 10 Polytechnics in Nigeria You Should Consider Attending

It’s safe to say that the top 10 polytechnics in Nigeria have stood the test of time, having been around since the mid-1960s, and they continue to grow and evolve over time.

This being said, it can be difficult to decide which polytechnic to attend if you’re not even sure what all polytechnics are and what they do.

This is why I have put together this list of the top 10 polytechnics in Nigeria to help you make your decision. 

You should definitely consider attending one of these polytechnics if you want to learn the skills needed to succeed in today’s economy.

1) Ogun State Polytechnic

Moshood Abiola Polytechnic was founded in 1979 and was originally the Ogun State Polytechnic of Abeokuta. 

With the purpose of awarding diplomas and higher national certificates.

It is found in Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, where many Nigerian students go to attend school.

It’s the first school on our list of top 10 polytechnics in Nigeria.

2) Delta State Polytechnic, Oko

Delta State Polytechnic, Oko, is a polytechnic institution located in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The school was established on October 1, 1997.

3) Federal Polytechnic Ilaro

Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, sometimes referred to as FPI, is a polytechnic located in Ilaro, Ogun State. 

It was established by Decree No. 6 of 1972 and inaugurated on 1 September 1973 by General Yakubu Gowon, then Head of State of Nigeria.

 

4) Osun State Polytechnic

Located in Ile-Ife, Osun State Polytechnic was established by an Act of the State House of Assembly and became operational on 1 August 2005. 

It is a co-educational institution with over 2,000 students currently enrolled in its programmes. The polytechnic has five schools:

School of Management Sciences, Engineering Technology, Business Studies, Education, and School of Art & Design.

The polytechnic offers National Diploma (ND) programmes at certificate level while its Higher National Diploma (HND) programme is at undergraduate level.

 

5) Lagos State Polytechnic

Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) is one of the best polytechnic institutions in Nigeria.

Established by law No. 21 of 1993, LASPOTECH commenced academic activities on January 12, 1994, as a pilot programme with 53 students.

Eight staff members under Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

The institution was established through an Inter-Governmental Agreement between Lagos State Government and Federal Government.

6) The Polytechnic Ibadan

The Polytechnic Ibadan is ranked as one of the best polytechnic institutions in Nigeria due to its high quality infrastructure and faculty. The institution has a well established library and modern learning resources. 

It also offers courses that are relevant to industry, which helps students be more employable after graduation. 

It’s also worth noting that The Polytechnic Ibadan was established in 1950, making it one of Nigeria’s oldest educational institutions.

7) Federal Poly, Oko

Oko Federal Polytechnic is among the top ten polytechnic institutions in Nigeria. 

Located at Oko, Ondo State, it was established by an Act of National Assembly on June 22, 1992.

8) Federal Polytechnic Ede

The Federal Polytechnic Ede is a polytechnic located in Ede, Osun State, Nigeria.

It was established as an instrumentality of the federal government by Decree No. 38 of 1966, and began operations on 4 November 1967 with two colleges namely:

College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) and College of Science and Technology (CAST). 

The Federal Government later converted it into a full-fledged polytechnic with power to award professional certificates, diplomas and degrees, through Decree No.

9) Igbesa Polytechnic

Igbesa, is a state owned polytechnic located at Igbesa-Obokun road Abeokuta. It was established in 1998.

Its sole mission is to produce skilled and competent technicians with emphasis on industrial skills for both local and international markets. 

The polytechnic has three schools: School of Management Sciences (SOMS), School of Engineering and Technology (SET) and School of Basic Studies (SBS).

SOMs offers courses like BSc Business Administration, Accounting Technology, Banking & Finance among others while SET offers courses like Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology among others.

SBS offers courses like Secretarial Practice, Computer Practice among others.

10) Abia State Polytechnic, Uturu.

Abia State Polytechnic, Uturu. is one of Nigeria’s best polytechnic located in Abia State, Southeast of Nigeria. 

Established in 1988 as a Federal Government Technical College and upgraded to a state polytechnic on December 16, 2004 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo (OBJ). 

It’s the last on our list of top 10 polytechnics in Nigeria.

The institution has also been accredited by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and National Universities Commission (NUC).
